opportUNITY: Bringing More of Ourselves to Life

There’s UNITY in Every Opportunity

I recently saw someone wearing a sports jersey with the word opportunity across it. The last five letters were capitalized: UNITY. There it was, within a word we usually associate with an opening, a possibility, a chance to move forward. I knew immediately I needed to stop and reflect. A familiar word had become an invitation to look at something differently.

I began to think about the opportunities that invite us into a fuller relationship with ourselves and one another. What becomes possible when an opportunity moves us from “me” toward “we”?

We often approach personal development by asking what we need to learn, change, or accomplish. Another question: What within us is asking to come together? Unity can mean bringing our attention, values, bodily awareness, and actions into greater agreement. It can also reach beyond the individual, into how we listen, care, and participate in the world. An opportunity for growth can also be an opportunity to bring more of ourselves into relationship.

For years, I have read about unity consciousness, the experience of belonging to an interconnected whole. I think of people making music together. Each person contributes a distinct sound, listening and responding as the music unfolds. I find inspiration in that image when I consider how strongly we identify with our individual lives while depending, at every moment, on relationships that sustain us.

I understand unity as both a spiritual possibility and something we can practice in ordinary circumstances. Bringing ourselves together also includes making room for what feels unresolved.

Gratitude helps me recognize these openings. When I notice the support already present, I become more attentive to what I can offer in return. Receiving and contributing begin to belong to the same movement. An opportunity becomes a gift whose value can extend beyond the person who first receives it.

The path of the sacred has brought me back to this relationship again and again. An experience can open something within us, and then daily life gives us opportunities to live from that opening. A conversation asks for our attention. What we do in these moments gives our understanding a place in the world.

The same understanding carries into our relationships. Unity has room for differences. Laura and I bring our own experiences, questions, and ways of seeing to the work we share. Listening allows each of us to encounter something beyond our own perspective. I value the understanding that can develop when people stay present long enough to discover what another person actually means. Agreement has more substance when there has been room for an honest difference.

For me, sacred practice gives time and attention to these relationships. In stillness, I become more aware of what I have been carrying. In reflection, I begin to recognize what deserves a response. The meaning of that practice continues into the way I enter the next conversation, attend to a responsibility, or make space for someone I love. I feel its value most clearly when it becomes part of how I live with others.

That is what draws me to the UNITY within opportunity. What caught my attention on a sports jersey has become a question I can carry into an ordinary day: What is this moment inviting me to bring together? Sometimes the answer begins within me. Sometimes it asks me to reach toward another person. Often, the two are closely connected.

When I consider an opportunity now, I also like this idea of bringing more of ourselves to life can become a shared undertaking, each of us contributing to a whole that grows through our participation.

Within opportunity, I see an invitation to unity… and within unity, an opportunity for us all.

The name “CUYA” carries with it both history and vision. Rooted in our origins as the Cuyamungue Institute, it now also serves as an acronym — C.U.Y.A. — a guiding symbol that unites our mission:

  • C –  Consciousness: The field of shared awareness that arises in Collective Presence.

  • U  – Unity: Our alignment with the Cycles of Nature and the rhythms of the cosmos, reminding us that we are woven into a greater fabric of reality.

  • Y – YOU: Your Awakening: The individual’s role – the inner journey of Embodiment and Wisdom, where through direct experience the body remembers and contributes to the whole.

  • A –  Ancestral Wisdom: Roots. Our connection to Sacred Lineage, honoring those who walked before us and rooting us in belonging and continuity.

Together, the Four Pathways of C.U.Y.A.-  Consciousness, Unity, Your Awakening, and Ancestral Wisdom –  form a single tapestry of practice. They remind us that awakening is not an abstract idea but something we live: through the body in Your Awakening, through nature’s cycles in Unity, through community in shared Consciousness, and through the guidance of Ancestral Wisdom.  ….
